Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How does the Private School Tax Credit work?
A. A.R.S. AZ 43-1089 provides for a credit of up to $1000 for Arizona taxpayers filing married (or $500 for those filing single) against state income tax obligations for payments made to a qualified school tuition organization (STO) that provides scholarships or grants to students in qualified private schools. Since the credit is dollar-for-dollar, contributing to the Catholic Tuition Organization of the Diocese of Phoenix (CTODP) will cost you absolutely nothing. Please Note: Your payment must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2007 to qualify for the tax credit on your 2007 tax return. Payment by credit card must be received by December 31st, 2007. For your convenience, you can make a secure credit card payment online at www.ctodp.org and receive e-mail verification
Q. How does a tax credit differ from a tax deduction? Can I claim both?
A. A tax credit is more beneficial than a tax deduction. A credit reduces your Arizona taxes dollar-for-dollar while a deduction reduces the taxable income upon which taxes are calculated. If you claim the CTODP payment as a tax credit on your Arizona return, you cannot also claim a deduction on your Arizona return. However, you can claim the CTODP payment as a charitable contribution (if you itemize your deductions) on your Federal income tax return and as a tax credit on your Arizona return.
Q. Do I have to give the full $1000 (or $500 if single)?
A. No. You can give any amount. You will receive a tax credit up to the $1000 maximum ($500 maximum if single). The credit will benefit you to the extent to which you incur an Arizona income tax obligation.
Q. Can I split my contribution between two or more private schools?
A. Yes. You can designate to multiple private schools. Your combined contributions are subject to the $1000 Private School Tax Credit maximum ($500 tax credit maximum if single).
Q. Can I also take advantage of the $400 Public School Tax Credit for support of extracurricular activities?
A. Yes. You can participate in both tax credit programs and receive a state tax credit of up to $1400 ($700 if single)! Contact the public school of your choice for details.
Q. Do I have to pay with a check?
A. No. You can use a check, credit card or the interest-free loan program available through Tempe Schools Credit Union. A TSCU representative will be at our school CTODP Coffee on Friday, December 7th from 8am- 9:30am to accept applications. You can also contribute online, a form is available at www.ctodp.org.
Q. Does the CTODP accept matching gifts from employers?
A. Yes! This is a great way to double or triple your payment. Your employer's benefits department can verify participation. Complete the employee portion of the application and mail to: CTODP 340 E. Palm Lane Suite A-138 Phoenix, AZ 85004 or mail it with your payment. CTODP will notify you upon receipt of the matching payment. A list of participating employers is available at www.ctodp.org.

How does the CTODP Program Work?
Through the Arizona’s Private School Tuition Tax Credit, any Arizona taxpayer can contribute any amount up to a maximum of $1000 (if married) or $500 (if single) to SFX families through the CTODP Program and receive a dollar-for-dollar TAX CREDIT on their state taxes. This credit directly reduces state tax liability. In addition, this tax credit may be claimed as a charitable contribution on an itemized Federal tax return, thus lowering the amount of Federal taxes paid. A contribution to CTODP is a WIN-WIN! It saves money in taxes and helps families at our school - all at no cost.
Where does the money contributed to the CTODP go?
Funds designated for SFX will go directly to families for tuition assistance. Funds are first distributed to families with the greatest financial need. After these needs are met, remaining funds go to families requesting financial assistance based on funds availability. Over 60% of our students receive need-based scholarships and funds-available grants!!!
