3B Homeroom 2008
3rd grade at St. Francis is a milestone year, rich with academic, social and personal growth for children. Our goal is to bring the curriculum to life while aligning instruction with our Student Learning Expectations, Diocesan and Arizona state standards. We will strive to provide students with academic knowledge, social responsibility, effective study skills, and opportunities for personal growth. Our desire is to deliver both engaging and interesting instruction with authentic learning opportunities.

What to expect this year......
*Field experiences: Az Mining and Mineral Museum (September), pumpkin math on campus (November), Az State Capital (January), The Never Ending Story (April), World Wildlife Zoo (May)
*Reading: In-depth reading comprehension strategy work with a variety of genres (Houghton Mifflin series), Accelerated Reader program
*Math: Multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, data and probability, mathematical thinking/problem-solving strategies.
*Science: Primary focuses include Earth, Life, and Physical sciences, "hands on labs", technology integration
*Social Studies: Geography, Ancient World history, The Age of Exploration, branches of government, important people in history and science, and economics (Junior Achievement)
* Writing: Six traits to better writing(6+1), writing across genres as outlined in the Arizona State Standards (six samples to be completed for writing portfolio)
* Religion: Sacrament preparation and spiritual retreat experience, learning prayers, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd lessons, saint study to select Confirmation name, emphasis on Ignatian model of educating the "whole" person through Social justice and community service projects, cooperative learning through 8th grade buddy program.
* Fine Arts: Music with Mrs. Nemeth (learning the recorder), Art with Mrs. Meyer, Christmas and Spring pageants, Spanish with Sra Barker and Physical Education with Coaches Bauer and Coach Behring
