Sixth Grade Math

Sixth grade math focuses on mastery of decimals, fractions and percent.  Problem solving, probability, geometry and pre-algebra are also be explored.  Highlights of sixth grade math include participation in "Pi Day" and the educational outreach program “Fantasy Baseball”.

A variety of teaching styles and assessments are used to create an environment where all learners have the opportunity for success. In addition to mathematical concepts, students learn study skills, note-taking and test-taking strategies.  They also work on proper math work form to prepare them for junior high and high school.

PI Day

Sixth grade students will celebrate Pi Day on March 14th, the third month and fourteenth day of the year (3.14 and Albert Einstein’s birthday). Pi day is a great way to celebrate math and bring awareness about pi to the entire school community.  To prepare for Pi Day students write a research paper about Albert Einstein and pi.  In math, science, language and computer classes they apply what they are learning about pi and use technology, problem solving, geometry, the scientific method and 6-plus traits writing skills.

Fantasy Baseball - Making Math Fun!!!

Fantasy Baseball is an exciting mathematics unit in which students use baseball cards and real-life statistics to create and play simulated baseball games. Fantasy Baseball teaches students important mathematical concepts that are used in geometry, algebra, decimals, fractions, probability and statistics.  By associating mathematics with baseball, Fantasy Baseball turns the subject of math into something students can enjoy and relate to.

Mathematics lessons are tied to state standards and cover the following topics:

  • Finding and using ratios to interpret data
  • Applying equivalency: fraction/decimal/percent
  • Using algebraic formulas to compare numeric data
  • Collecting/organizing/analyzing/presenting data
  • Constructing circle graphs
  • Experimental and theoretical probability
  • Applying technology to analyze and present data (Excel spreadsheets)

Students participate in a Fantasy Baseball Tournament in which they use the statistics and graphs they created in class to explore theoretical and experimental probability by playing simulated baseball games using their “teams”.

As part of the kick-off to the Fantasy Baseball mathematics unit, sixth grade students attend an Oakland A’s Spring Training game where they keep score and calculate end of game statistics.
