St. Francis Xavier is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children's health, well-being and the ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activities. Healthy eating patterns are essential for students to achieve their full academic potential, physical and mental growth and lifelong health and well-being. Students are given the tools and knowledge necessary to make healthy choices for their body.
The school has a wellness policy which in accordance with Arizona Revised Statute 15-242 which restricts the distribution of all food of minimal nutritional value at school during the day. All food brought in for special occasions must comply with this mandate.Three free days are allowed and have been designated by grade level.

All schools shall comply with Arizona law AAC Title 9, Chapter 6, Article 7 (R9-6-701) Vaccine Preventable Diseases regarding immunizations. These laws state that no child may attend school unless such child can present to the school a verifiable immunization record against listed communicable diseases or a plan for immunization as specified by the Arizona Department of Health Services. Requests for exemption will be granted only in accordance with Arizona law.

Varicella form
The school retains a licensed registered nurse. The nurse renders emergency first aid to students who are injured or become ill at school. She works with students, parents and teachers regarding health problems and serves as the contact between home and school on health matters.
In case of injury or illness during the school day the students are sent to the nurse. The nurse determines if student should be sent home or return to class. Parents will be notified by phone to pick up sick or injured children. Parents are to keep emergency information current by calling the office and letting us know about changes in phone numbers. Parents are requested to pick up students promptly as the school does not the facilities to care for students who cannot attend class.
Medications
Prescription medication will be administered when necessary. Medication must be in the original prescription bottle. If a student needs to take a medication at school, ask the pharmacist for a second, labeled bottle and send only the amount needed to be taken at school.
Arizona law does allow students who need inhalers or an epi-pen to self carry medication with the necessary forms completed and on file in the nurse's office.

Non-rescription medications may be given only if sent in by parents, in the original container with students name on the label and with signed written consent. This includes tylenol, motrin, cough drops or tums.
