My Story Continues

09-22-2019From Fr. FambriniFather Robert Fambrini, S.J.

Blessed Sacrament Church (BSC) in Hollywood is similar to St. Francis Xavier. Both are large, beautiful churches right in the heart of town. Blessed Sacrament is located on Sunset Boulevard and is about 15 years older than SFX.

For many years BSC was known as the “Church of the Stars.” Such parishioner names as Irene Dunne, Ray Bolger, Loretta Young and Ricardo Montalban were often mentioned. Many famous celebrities were either married or buried from there.

By the time I arrived in 1988, much of that had changed. The area surrounding the church (the flat lands) were inhabited by immigrants from Central America and Mexico. Those who lived within our parish boundaries in the Hollywood Hills had begun to frequent the wealthier parishes to the west.

I became pastor in 1989, following Fr. Ed Callanan, S.J. To be honest, I do not remember much of the experience of my five years there except that there never seemed to be a dull moment. The economic contrast of the poor neighbors and the homeless who slept on the front steps of the church and the wealthy businesses surrounding us was stark.

What I do remember was my fifteen minutes of fame which came right after the Rodney King verdict riots in April 1992.

The looting had spread throughout our community, especially along Hollywood Boulevard. By Sunday word had gone out that anyone who had looted could return items to churches, no questions asked. And so it happened that after the noon Mass I was approached by a young man carrying a traveling bag. What this usually meant was a request for money to travel somewhere. However, this case was different. The man dropped the bag at my feet and asked me to check out what was inside. When I looked, all I could see were women’s clothes. “That’s right,” he said. “I’m one of the looters from Fredrick’s in Hollywood. I wanted Madonna’s bustier but it wasn’t there. I thought I could sell this stuff but now I can’t even sleep.” He asked me to return them and with that he left. I went to my office to deposit the bag for the time being. I remember dropping the bag on the floor of my office, turning to leave and then turning back again to see exactly what was in the bag. Out I pulled Katie Segal’s (“Married with Children”) pushup bra and Ava Gardner’s bloomers.

Later that evening I mentioned at my Mass that I had encountered a looter from Fredrick’s and that he had left me items to return which shouldn’t be in a pastor’s office. After Mass a parishioner who worked in PR asked if he could pass the story along because the media was looking for some lighter stories to report.

The next morning I had eight phone messages from the LA Times, CNN, the Boston Globe and the BBC, among others. Later in the week the NY Times even had a write up with a picture of me holding the purloined items. Entertainment Tonight jumped into the fray and came by to record my version of things.

When I called Fredrick’s, I left a voice message repeating what I had told my parishioners, namely, that I had items that did not belong in a pastor’s office. When the general manager of Fredrick’s returned my call, she had only one question: “What’s the matter? Didn’t you like the color?”
