Merry Christmas!

12-22-2019From Fr. FambriniFather Robert Fambrini, S.J.

What follows is the Christmas letter I sent out to family and friends. Merry Christmas!

Surprise! I’ve moved to the desert! (Check that return address!) Full disclosure: last year at this time when I wrote, I knew I was being transferred but could not say anything. When I told my family at our Thanksgiving dinner 2018, their collective response was a nonplused: Oh, spring training.

I am now the pastor of the only Jesuit parish in all of Arizona, St. Francis Xavier in Phoenix. I arrived here four months ago in the midst of tremendous summer heat. The very welcoming parishioners were so apologetic as if they were somehow to blame! But they promised cooler weather and eventually, it arrived toward the end of September, first with morning coolness and then throughout the day. I’m looking forward to those 330 days of sunshine.

Now about the parish: 91 years old, the wealthiest parish in our province and majority English-speaking, both aspects of parish life which are very new to me. The most important ministry is our grade school (pre-k to 8) which has double and triple grades with a current enrollment of 641. I am new to the scene and so is our principal, a faith-filled man with great enthusiasm. Also, located on the overall square block (for which I am not responsible) is Brophy Jesuit High School (boys) and Xavier College Prep (girls), a school-day total of 3500 students.

Recently I have communicated to the parish my vision (goals) as pastor. They include bringing the parish and school together, more fully integrating the Spanish and English-speaking communities, sharing our resources with a parish less fortunate than ourselves (twinning) and establishing a vibrant center for Ignatian Spirituality and the Exercises. That should keep me busy!

The wonderful parishioners at Most Holy Trinity in San Jose gave me a lovely send-off after my six years of service there. I miss their loving care and the vibrant spice of their cultural celebrations. I also miss the close proximity I had there to my many Jesuit brothers at Santa Clara University and Los Gatos Jesuit Center.

Before I arrived here in July, I enjoyed a most wonderful three-month sabbatical. During those 90 days, I did not wear out my welcome in any one place. I traveled and then traveled some more (Mexico, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Portland, San Diego), putting some 5,000 miles on my 13-year-old Prius. I spent time with both family and friends and, in some cases, visiting acquaintances I had not seen in thirty and forty years.

We are seven here in the local Jesuit community. Four of us work in the parish, two at the high school and one is a hospital chaplain. They are wonderfully supportive and welcoming. I like being here and feel very much at home. On the weekend of my installation (November 3), they welcomed my many visitors who flew in from locations near and far.

So, what will this New Year bring? Possible impeachment, a presidential election, uncertainty abounds. The only certainty is our loving God who always provides for us. Never lose hope. There will be wonderful moments of celebration in the New Year and evidence of the wonder of God in unexpected places. Of that I am sure!

Feliz Navidad!

Feliz Navidad!

Sorpresa! ¡Me he mudado al desierto!
