Friends,

Last week you heard from Simon Zachary. I’m the “other guy” in the back row. My name is Nick Russell, and I’m a novice in the Society of Jesus. Novitiate is the first step for Jesuits who are in formation for the priesthood. It’s a two-year process in which we undergo a series of different “experiments” to test out our Jesuit vocation. These experiments include making the 30-day Spiritual Exercises retreat, serving in a hospital, making a pilgrimage, performing “humble tasks” around the novitiate, teaching in a school, and preaching (usually in the novitiate and on our experiments). My teaching experiment has brought me here to Phoenix, where I am teaching Scripture to first-year students at Brophy College Preparatory.

An important part of our training as novices is to develop habits of prayer and reflection so that we can develop a “contemplative consciousness” in which we’re able to keep God always before our eyes. In addition to teaching Scripture, my goal in working with young men at Brophy has been to introduce them to the loving God that I’ve met throughout my life: a God who is active in their lives, abundant in his love, and moved by their successes, failures, hopes, dreams, desires, and struggles. Working with these students every day reminds me that God is active in their lives. I am constantly amazed at the ways in which these young men see God at work--and at their desire to be more vigilant in trying to find God’s presence among their daily struggles.

I’m so honored that, in addition to becoming a part of the Brophy community, I’ve been able to call St. Francis Xavier my spiritual home in Phoenix. While we were still celebrating in the church, I was lucky enough to meet many of you at Mass. I know that these are challenging times for many people--loneliness, loss, grief, uncertainty and hardship. I know that God is in the midst of it, moved by our struggles and present in our hope for a better tomorrow.

At the end of May, I’ll be heading back to our novitiate in Culver City, where with God’s grace, I’ll hopefully make first vows in August. Please be assured of my prayers for you and your family. And please pray for me and my novice brothers as we approach vows. Until then, know how grateful I am to spend this time in prayer as a part of the St. Francis Xavier community.

In Christ,

Nick Russell, SJ

Amigos,

Nick Russell, SJ
