A Period of Forty Days

Last week I went to the dictionary to find out the root meaning of quarantine. To my surprise the first definition (and root) was simply “a period of forty days”. Nothing about staying at home, social distancing or face masks.

Curiously, the number 40 appears dozens of times in the Bible, always indicating a time of testing and trial.

Our current quarantine has lasted more than forty days but it has certainly been, and continues to be, a time of testing and trial. But perhaps there is some good news when we examine the scriptural references to the number.

To list just three: Noah and his family and the various species of the world’s animals remained in the ark for forty days during the great flood which destroyed the world. The Israelite people wandered in the desert for forty years after their great escape from Egypt. Jesus, driven by the Spirit, fasted and was tempted in the desert for forty days immediately after his baptism. All three examples were times of trial and testing but all three ended in a form of new life. For Noah God made him the promise never to destroy the world again by flood. The Chosen People made it eventually to the Promised Land, their own land. Jesus left the desert empowered by his Father to begin his public ministry.

All three examples had something else in common: perseverance and patience. Noah, the Israelites and Jesus held firm to the promises they had been given by God. Results were not swift but revealed themselves over time.

In these days of trial and testing, Spirit and Life, let us persevere and be patient that the God who has begun his good work in us may bring it to fulfillment.
