Dear Beloved of St. Francis Xavier Parish:

Happy Pentecost! Today we celebrate the Spirit of God which energizes and gives life and renewal to us as a people of faith.

Last week we Jesuits received a letter from our provincial which posed a piercing question: We are facing the greatest humanitarian and economic crisis our world has seen since the Great Depression, the largest unemployment in 100 years, and are likely on the verge of wide-spread famine. We are seeing the biggest spending packages ever passed; we are seeing who gets included, and who gets left out in response. In 20 years, what do we want to look back and say we did in this moment? How do we lead our people from a mind-set of recovery and returning to normal, to a mind-set of renewal to a better future?

I share this question with you because I feel it is important that as Arizona begins its cautious reopening, we as a faith community begin to ask ourselves: how will we be different; how do we want to be?

As Pentecost arrived the disciples, enclosed in an upper room out of fear, had been by and large passive participants in Jesus’s passion, suffering and death. Once the Spirit arrives, all that changes. Something new happens; they leave the upper room and, fearful no more, become active agents of change by preaching, teaching, healing, even giving their lives for Christ.

We, also, face that similar challenge today. We have been holed up in fear and caution. Will our reopening simply mean the wiping off of pews and the maintaining of physical distance or will it mark a new beginning, the pouring of new wine into new wineskins, the creation of a re-energized and enlightened spirit-filled community and world?

Feliz Pentecostés

¡Feliz Pentecostés! Hoy celebramos el Espíritu de Dios que nos da energía, vida y renovación como pueblo de fe.

La semana pasada los Jesuitas recibimos una carta de nuestro provincial que planteaba una pregunta penetrante: Nos enfrentamos a la mayor crisis humanitaria y económica que nuestro mundo ha visto desde la Gran Depresión, el mayor desempleo en 100 años, y probablemente al borde de una hambruna generalizada. Estamos viendo los mayores paquetes de gastos jamás aprobados; estamos viendo quién se incluye y quién se deja fuera en respuesta. En 20 años, ¿qué queremos mirar hacia atrás y decir que hicimos en este momento? ¿Cómo llevamos a nuestra gente de una mentalidad de recuperación y retorno a la normalidad, a una mentalidad de renovación hacia un futuro mejor?

Comparto esta pregunta con ustedes porque creo que es importante que a medida que Arizona comience su cautelosa reapertura, nosotros, como comunidad de fe, empecemos a preguntarnos: ¿cómo seremos diferentes; cómo queremos serlo?

Cuando llegó Pentecostés, los discípulos, encerrados en una habitación superior por miedo, habían sido en gran medida participantes pasivos de la pasión, el sufrimiento y la muerte de Jesús. Una vez que llega el Espíritu, todo eso cambia. Algo nuevo sucede; salen del aposento alto y, sin miedo, se convierten en agentes activos del cambio predicando, enseñando, sanando, incluso dando sus vidas por Cristo.

Nosotros también nos enfrentamos hoy a ese desafío similar. Nos hemos refugiado en el miedo y la precaución. ¿Nuestra reapertura significará simplemente la limpieza de los bancos y el mantenimiento de la distancia física o marcará un nuevo comienzo, el vertido de vino nuevo en odres nuevos, la creación de una comunidad y un mundo reenergizados e iluminados llenos de espíritu?
