Welcome

08-23-2020From Fr. TeodoroFr. George Teodoro, SJ

Dear friends,

It has been a baptism by fire these first two weeks in Phoenix – I don’t think there has been a single day below 110o since I’ve been here! But truly, I have received such a warm welcome here at SFX, and I am truly grateful to God to have been missioned here as your new associate pastor.

A little bit about myself: My mother, Dee, grew up in rural Washington state in an Irish Catholic family, while my father, Reynaldo, grew up in Quezon City in the Philippines. They met and married in New York, where both my older brothers were born. My dad got a job with the Boeing Co., and so the family moved out to Seattle, where I was born and raised.

I grew up with a variety of interests – I’ve played piano since I was five years old and played trombone and trumpet in school concert and jazz bands. I am an Eagle Scout and an avid fan of hiking and the outdoors. I swam competitively in club, high school, and college teams, and was active at my home parish of St. Anthony’s in Renton, WA.

I was blessed with a full scholarship to Seattle University, where I majored in History. At Seattle U., in addition to swim team, I was president of Habitat for Humanity, assistant conductor of the University Choir, and active in campus liturgy and retreat ministry. It was also at Seattle U where I met the Jesuits. After graduating, I spent a year studying Southeast Asian History in Canberra, Australia, and then worked for a couple years in real estate management, before entering the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Portland, OR, in 2005.

Since then, I have been graced to find a calling for my many varied interests. As a Jesuit, I have found that all of my random gifts and talents have found a home – whether teaching algebra, band and choir at Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma, serving the developmentally disabled with L’Arche in Spokane, studying Catholic disaster relief and response at the University of Toronto, directing a Black Catholic Gospel Choir at St. Columba’s parish in Oakland, or – most recently – teaching World History, US History, Economics, Government, Social Justice, Art History, and World Religions at Verbum Dei High School in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles for the past 5 years. In each of these missions, I have been humbled and awed by the experience of the Holy Spirit alive and active in the lives of the faithful.

With my new mission here at SFX, I am looking forward to new challenges and new ministries. Although I have been ordained for 4 years, this will be my first mission full time in a parish. I hope to be able to get to know you through the wide variety of ministries that we have, and through our sharing of the sacraments.

Yours in the peace of Christ,

Fr. George Teodoro, SJ

Bienvenido

Queridos amigos,

P. George Teodoro, SJ
