Hello SFX Community!

It is without hesitation that I can say I have been abundantly blessed in being your new Director of Music & Liturgy. The past six weeks have been a whirlwind of exciting new adventures and challenges, but the staff has been incredibly welcoming and supportive—everything a new employee could have asked for! My wife Lexy and I are both very grateful to all of you for your kindness in making us feel right at home. While you may now be acquainted with us through our music, Fr. Bob asked me to use this space to talk a bit about my background, so here we go.

Originally born right outside of Boston, MA, I am the oldest of eight children and spent most of my life growing up in western New York. For 23 years, my father served as a Pastoral Administrator in two Catholic parishes (serving as head of the parish in lieu of a priest pastor) in the Diocese of Rochester, being ordained to the Permanent Deaconate in 2000. Since beginning piano studies at age 6, I had the privilege of starting to play for liturgies in my very early teen years, and over the years moved from pianist in the youth group ensemble to adult choir accompanist; eventually becoming the sole music director for the parish in my undergraduate college years.

I graduated from Ithaca College in 2014 with a degree in Jazz Studies, and by that point I had gained experience as an Artistic Director at major regional concert houses, and also beginning experience as a choral and symphonic conductor. I was then hired for Norwegian Cruise Line where I served as the theatrical Music Director for one of the largest cruise ships in the fleet based out of New York City. I spent the next two years as a pianist traveling to nearly 30 countries on the Celebrity and Princess Cruise Lines, often accompanying Broadway and West End performers.

It was there I met the amazingly beautiful and talented woman who would eventually become my wife, Lexy, who was also performing on a Princess ship. In 2016, I moved to the Phoenix area to pursue a masters in Music Direction for Musical Theatre & Opera at Arizona State University, where I also served as Graduate Teaching Assistant. During that time, I served as Music Ministry Coordinator for St. Luke Catholic Church in north Phoenix. After graduating in 2018, Lexy and I were married and I continued to be a freelance Music Director in the area, working for various theatrical companies before eventually becoming the full-time Resident Music Director for Arizona Broadway Theatre in Peoria, and also the Music Director/Conductor for the Department of Theatre Arts at Xavier College Preparatory.

Faced with the new unknown in the world of COVID-19, I strongly felt the urging from the Lord to return to music ministry. I have always felt the call to use music to help bring people into a deeper relationship with God, and I could not have asked for a more amazing parish to serve at! As we look toward the future, I am excited to help support the mission of our baptismal call to be Christ for others, and to help create opportunities for the Holy Spirit to do His best work in our community. See you in church!

Your brother in Christ,

Josh Condon

Vamos a Conocernos Josh Condon

Josh Condon
