1st Sunday of Advent

11-29-2020From Fr. SauerFr. Tony Sauer, SJ

Dear Parish Friends,

The liturgical season of Advent is an endangered species. It has been for a long time. We get Lent, but Advent, not so much. The four weeks before Christmas are not meant to be a Christmas celebration, but a time to delve a bit more deeply into why we have Christmas at all!

Advent is a time to hold our horses, hold back. Secular-commercial Christmas is already with us, but we wait in anticipation for Christian Christmas which will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The Jews waited some 4000 years; we can quietly welcome Jesus into our world for four weeks!

Christ has come – Christ will come again!

But what are we doing now if he’s already been here? Is Advent merely a remembrance of things past as we gather around the tree and Christmas crib? What we are doing is preparing for the Advent that really matters to us: his coming into our hearts at Christmas! Advent is about his coming into our lives and spirits in about twenty plus more shopping days!

Folks, don’t let your Christmas be glitzy and tinsel-driven! Let the kids have a great Santa time, but let them know: there’s more – a whole lot more!!! And you know what, my friends, the Child Jesus is worth waiting for this Advent – and always!

Happy Advent and, as a result, a truly Merry Christmas!!!

Sincerely, Anthony P. Sauer, S.J.

Sinceramente,

Anthony P. Sauer, S.J
