Ave Atque Vale

03-14-2021From Fr. Wanser Fr. George Wanser, S.J.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Most Jesuits make a fourth vow "to go anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice for the good of the mission of the Church." My fourth vow has blessed me with a global adventure from the Arctic to the Argentine; from the Pyramids of Teotihuacán to the Pyramids of Giza; from the Great Wall to the Wailing Wall; from the Yukon to the Mekong to the Amazon. What a wonderful, colorful, adventurous ride in the service of the Gospel of Love and Justice!

And just as I was preparing to spend my doddering years here in the desert among the people whom I have come to love, Fr. Provincial, with the approval of Fr. General, has missioned me to the province retirement home and infirmary at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, California - this time, not to ‘dodder’ (at least not yet), but to be superior of the Jesuit Community.

Throughout the pandemic, SHJC has been on ‘lockdown’. Our senior Jesuits have been confined to their rooms and meals delivered to their doors in the infirmary. Despite these precautions, we have lost 9 Jesuits to COVID-19 and 6 to natural causes since December. Now that the Fathers and Brothers have received their second vaccine, are they easing some restrictions.

The current superior at SHJC, Fr. John Privett, S.J. is one of my heroes. John has turned Los Gatos into a warm, inviting home for our senior men, but after 14 years of service, it’s time to give him a well-deserved break.

Now, I’m not saying farewell just yet. I’ll be here causing trouble until St. Ignatius’ Day, July 31. Meanwhile... Thank you all for your love and care and support for me and for St. Francis Xavier Church and School. Oremus pro invicem (let’s pray for one another).

Ahora, no me voy a despedir todavía.
