Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

06-06-2021From Fr. WanserFr. George Wanser, SJ

At the Last Supper Jesus became the Paschal Lamb. At the time of the original Passover, the blood of the sacrificial lamb on their doorposts meant the Angel of Death would pass over the Israelites houses so that they might be freed from slavery. At the Last Supper, when Jesus proclaimed himself to be the Lamb of God and gave us his Body and Blood sacrificed on the wood of the cross, Jesus became our Paschal Lamb and freed us from Sin and everlasting Death.

In giving us His Body and Blood, Jesus shares his very self with us. Every time we receive Jesus’ Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist we become what we eat. In a famous poem, St. Theresa of Avila admonishes us, “I have no hands but yours.” When we receive the Eucharist, we become Jesus’ hands, heart, and compassion for those around us in need. Today we give thanks for the miracle of the Holy Eucharist and pray that the Lord will strengthen us to be His hands and heart for our suffering world.
