Humility and Gratitude

Humility and gratitude are two virtues that stand out for me in the gospel of today.

Jesus speaks strongly to the religious leadership of the day. The scribes and Pharisees are hypocrites in that they preach one thing and do another. Love God and love one's neighbor is the one commandment that sums up the Jewish tradition. The scribes and Pharisees are only looking after themselves and even making life difficult for their fellow Israelites. As described in the gospel, the leaders totally lack humility.

Jesus tells a story to hold a mirror up to the faces of the leadership that they might see their lack of humility and gratitude. A poor widow comes to the temple to make her offering with no fanfare; she just quietly slips her two small coins into the treasury, “her gratitude money” and then slips away. The scribes and Pharisees on the other hand make a big show of their “generosity”.

In the story telling, Jesus calls his disciples to act out of a very different disposition of heart, a heart that is humble and grateful. May it be so with us.
