Two Paths

02-13-2022From Fr. TeodoroFr. George Teodoro, SJ

Psalm 1, which serves as an introduction to the entire book of Psalms, speaks of two possible paths for the people of Israel: the path of the just and the path of the wicked. With its usual poetic flare, Psalm 1 describes the just one as a tree in full flower, bearing great fruit and bringing prosperity to all, while the path of the wicked is compared to useless chaff which blows away in the wind. “For the Lord watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes” (Ps 1:6).

In Matthew's version of the Beatitudes, we are offered the famous description of those whom God will bless: the meek, the poor in spirit, peacemakers, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, etc. But in today’s reading from the Gospel of Luke, Jesus doesn't just describe the path of the ones who will receive a blessing. He also offers a vision of the other path - the path of the wicked recalled from the psalm. The “woe to yous” from today's gospel remind us that those who have received blessings are called to pass it on those who are less fortunate. If you are rich, share with the poor. If you have resources enough to satisfy, give to those in need. If people respect or think well of you, use your connections to lift up the lowly and the outcast.

The annual Charity and Development Appeal from the diocese of Phoenix which launches today is an opportunity to reflect on which path you are currently on, and an invitation to continue following Jesus along the way of the just. Thank you for prayerfully considering your contribution.
