A Gospel Reflection

10-23-2022From Fr. Dan SullivanFr. Dan Sullivan, SJ

There is a saying that if the gospel message does not pique our conscience, then we have not heard the gospel. Today, based on the first reading from the Book of Sirach, the focus is on the contrast of the “haves and the have nots”. It is not God’s fault that this is the global reality of injustice that we live in.

The church that Jesus established is a Pilgrim Church. To quote Fr. Chas Kestermeier, S.J. of Creighton University: “We are always trying to get closer to God by our prayer and the lives that flow from that.”

The God of justice desires to work through our loving hearts, he is desiring to solve world problems using our minds, he is feeding and healing and lifting up the poor by using our hands.

From the gospel, as true Pilgrim People, we are not arrogant like the Pharisee, but humble servants committed to helping other pilgrims along the way.
