Our church seats 1400 people. Our typical 6:15am daily Mass has between 20-30 congregants, who generally space themselves out as much as possible. Put these two things together, and it means that when the morning Mass meets in the church, it can feel empty and distant, and the presiders often have a difficult time seeing the faces or hearing the responses of the congregants.
On the other hand, once we moved into the St. Ignatius Chapel, those same 20-30 people made the space feel robust and warm – a community that meets and prays together side by side. Though the chapel may lack the grandeur of the big church, it provides an intimacy that is impossible to achieve in the larger space. As a presider, I greatly prefer the warmth and immediacy of the chapel. I can see the faces of our congregants, I can hear their responses, and we can meet together without the need for microphones or electronics. It is an experience of Church that hints at what the first Christians must have experienced – small numbers of fellow believers gathered in a home or small worship space, breaking open the Word and Sacrament together. It is a communal intimacy that is just not possible in the big church.
During Lent, weekday Mass attendance grows enough that we don’t fit in the Ignatius chapel; but now that the Easter Season has arrived, attendance is back to its normal levels. P. ¿Por qué la misa de las 6:15 a. m. es en la capilla y no en la iglesia grande?
Nuestra iglesia tiene capacidad para 1400 personas. A nuestra misa diaria de las 6:15am asisten entre 20 y 30 feligreses, que generalmente se distancian lo mas posible. Tomando en cuenta estas dos cosas significa que cuando la misa de la mañana se reúne en la iglesia, puede sentirse vacía y distante, y los sacerdotes a menudo tienen dificultad de verle las caras o escuchar las respuestas de los feligreses.
Por otro lado, una vez que nos cambiamos la misa a la Capilla de San Ignacio, esas mismas 20-30 personas hicieron que el espacio se sintiera sólido y cálido: una comunidad que se reúne y ora juntos. Aunque la capilla puede carecer de la grandeza de la iglesia, nos brinda una intimidad que es imposible de lograr en un espacio más grande. Como celebrante, prefiero mucho la calidez y la inmediatez de la capilla. Puedo ver los rostros de nuestros feligreses, puedo escuchar sus respuestas y podemos reunirnos sin necesidad de micrófonos o electrónicos. Es una experiencia de la Iglesia que insinúa lo que los primeros cristianos debieron haber experimentado: un pequeño número de hermanos creyentes reunidos en un pequeño espacio de adoración, abriendo juntos la Palabra y el Sacramento. Es una intimidad comunitaria que simplemente no es posible en la iglesia grande.
Durante la Cuaresma, la asistencia a misa entre semana crece tanto que no cabemos en la capilla de Ignacio; pero ahora que ha llegado la temporada de Pascua, la asistencia ha vuelto a disminuir. Si desea experimentar la calidez de esta pequeña pero poderosa comunidad, acompañenos a las 6:15am todos los días de la semana, excepto los días festivos. ¡Esperamos verte allí alguna vez!
