Menein - To Stay

The Greek verb ‘Menein’ appears 8 times in the first 8 verses of today’s Gospel passage (John 15:1-8). Why?

‘Menein’ means to remain, to stay, to abide, to live, to dwell, to be an integral part of... To continue the life of Jesus in our hearts, we must ‘remain’ in him. Jesus is the vine, we are the branches. To bear fruit, we must remain, abide, stay, live, dwell, be an integral part of Jesus.

At Confirmation this past weekend, Fr. Bob insisted over and over again that receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation isn’t graduation from Church. It is the initiation. To bear fruit we must ‘grow’ the life of Jesus in our hearts. We must receive the Body and Blood of Jesus as often as we possibly can so that we can ‘remain’ in Jesus so that Jesus can ‘abide, live, dwell’ in us.

Jesus is the Bread of Life. When we receive the Holy Eucharist, we become what we eat. We become Jesus’ heart, and hands to serve our troubled world. Receiving Holy Eucharist weekly or even daily is the most important way we have to grow Christ’s love in us so that we may be sustained in our mission to love God, our neighbor, and ourselves.

‘I am the Vine, you are the branches. Remain in me and you will bear fruit.’

El verbo griego 'Menein' aparece ocho veces en los primeros ocho versículos del pasaje del Evangelio de hoy (Juan 15: 1-8). ¿Por qué?

"Menein" significa permanecer, habitar, ser parte integral de ... Para continuar la vida de Jesús en nuestros corazones, debemos "permanecer" en él. Jesús es la vid, nosotros somos las ramas. Para dar fruto, debemos permanecer, vivir, habitar, ser una parte integral de Jesús.

En la Confirmación el pasado fin de semana, el P. Roberto insistió una y otra vez en que recibir el Sacramento de la Confirmación no es una graduación de la Iglesia. Es la iniciación. Para dar fruto debemos "hacer crecer" la vida de Jesús en nuestro corazón. Debemos recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús tan a menudo como sea posible para que podamos "permanecer" en Jesús para que Jesús pueda "permanecer, vivir, habitar" en nosotros.

Jesús es el pan de vida. Cuando recibimos la Sagrada Eucaristía, nos convertimos en lo que comemos. Nos convertimos en el corazón y las manos de Jesús para servir a nuestro mundo atribulado. Recibir la Sagrada Eucaristía semanalmente o incluso diariamente es la forma más importante que tenemos de hacer crecer el amor de Cristo en nosotros para que podamos ser sostenidos en nuestra misión de amar a Dios, a nuestro prójimo y a nosotros mismos.

"Yo soy la Vid, ustedes son las ramas. Permanece en mí y darás fruto".
