First Sunday of Lent: Clear Conscience

Usually, the first reading has something in common with the gospel. Today’s however, has more in common with the second reading from St. Peter. They both talk about Noah and the ark, where the few good people were saved by going through the water. Peter compares that to the waters of Baptism, in which we are saved by God. He also has an interesting image of Jesus “preaching to the spirits in prison.” It refers to the fallen angels whose disobedience lead the rest of the population to turn away from God. Just as God washed away the evil of the world in the waters of the flood, so the waters of Baptism made us into a new people who have clear consciences, both because God has forgiven our sins and because we promise to follow only Him.

That leads to the Gospel, where Jesus is tempted by Satan. But unlike the people of Noah’s time, Jesus does not fall to the temptations. Instead, he comes out of the desert, proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is near. He tells us to repent and believe in the good news.

That means we have a choice to make: Do we accept this kingdom and repent, or do we ignore our baptism and do what we want? We may say that we are willing to repent, but do we do anything about it? Do we still have a clear conscience when we think of how much time we spend getting to know Jesus? Ever pray or read the bible outside of church? Do we spend near as much on the poor, as we do for movies, hobbies, video games, or drinks? Do we ever tell anyone about the kingdom and what Jesus has done for us?

Next time you see a rainbow, think about the covenant that God made with Noah. Just as God’s promises get better and better till the coming of Jesus, we are challenged to be more and more like Him. Are you satisfied with just a promise that God won’t destroy us all in a flood? Or are you ready to live the New Covenant that Jesus promises to those who will follow him?

Una conciencia limpia Generalmente la primera lectura tiene algo en común con el evangelio. La de hoy, sin embargo, tiene más en común con la segunda lectura de San Pedro. Ambos hablan de Noé y del arca, donde las pocas personas buenas se salvaron al pasar por el agua. Pedro compara eso con las aguas del bautismo, en las que somos salvados por Dios. También tiene una imagen interesante de Jesús, que “fue a proclamar su mensaje a los espíritus encarcelados”. Se refiere a los ángeles caídos cuya desobediencia lleva al resto de la población a alejarse de Dios. Como Dios lavó el mal del mundo en las aguas del diluvio, de la misma forma las aguas del bautismo nos convirtieron en un nuevo pueblo que tiene la conciencia limpia, tanto porque Dios ha perdonado nuestros pecados como porque prometemos seguirlo sólo a Él.

Eso nos lleva al Evangelio, donde Jesús es tentado por Satanás. Pero a diferencia de la gente de la época de Noé, Jesús no cae en las tentaciones. En cambio, sale del desierto proclamando que el Reino de Dios está cerca. Nos dice que nos arrepintamos y creamos en la buena nueva.

Eso significa que tenemos que tomar una decisión: ¿Aceptamos a este reino y nos arrepentimos, o ignoramos nuestro bautismo y hacemos lo que queremos? Podemos decir que estamos dispuestos a arrepentirnos, pero ¿hacemos algo al respecto? ¿Todavía tenemos la conciencia limpia cuando pensamos en cuánto tiempo dedicamos a conocer a Jesús? ¿Alguna vez has orado o leído la Biblia fuera de la iglesia? ¿Gastamos casi lo mismo en ayudar a los pobres como en las películas, los pasatiempos, los videojuegos o las bebidas? ¿Les contamos a los demás sobre el reino y lo que Jesús ha hecho por nosotros?

La próxima vez que veas un arco iris, piensa en la alianza que Dios hizo con Noé. Así como las promesas de Dios mejoran cada vez más hasta la venida de Jesús, nosotros somos desafiados a ser cada vez más como Él. ¿Estás satisfecho con tan sólo la promesa de que Dios no nos destruirá a todos con un diluvio? ¿O estás listo para vivir la Nueva Alianza que Jesús promete a quienes lo seguirán?
