Holy water is water that has been blessed by a priest or deacon. It is a sacramental – not to be confused with a sacrament. Sacramentals are items or objects that have been blessed for a specific purpose – for instance, the oils used for initiation and the sick, the ashes for Ash Wednesday, or the rings for a wedding. These items are not themselves sacraments, but have the purpose of helping to make the mysterious love of God present in a tangible way.
In the case of holy water, it is water blessed for the purpose of reminding us of our baptism. It is a sign to both drive away evil as well as to invite the Holy Spirit to enter in and sanctify whatever it touches. We bless ourselves with holy water when we enter a church in order to cleanse us of any evil that may be upon us, but also to remind ourselves that we have been claimed by Christ as members of his Church.
All baptized Christians are called as prophets, kings, and priests. In this latter calling, all are called to bless those around them and invite them to new and greater life in the Spirit. Through the use of holy water, all the baptized can offer their blessing to those around them – warding away sin and the work of the evil spirit, while also affirming and inviting the Holy Spirit to work through them. Thus we can use holy water to bless our candles at the beginning of Advent, or a rosary we just acquired, or the doorway of a house we just rented. In each case, we are asking God to bless the object so that it might be used for holy and just purposes, and might banish any evil present in the place.
If you would like to acquire some holy water for your own use, there are spigots of blessed water near the east entrance of the church. Simply bring a clean bottle or vessel and fill it. Remember: a little goes a long way!
El agua bendita es agua que ha sido bendecida por un sacerdote o diácono. Es un sacramental, que no debe confundirse con un sacramento. Los sacramentales son artículos u objetos que han sido bendecidos para un propósito específico, por ejemplo, los aceites utilizados para la iniciación y los enfermos, las cenizas para el Miércoles de Ceniza o los anillos para una boda. Estos elementos no son sacramentos en sí mismos, pero tienen el propósito de ayudar a hacer presente el amor misterioso de Dios de una manera tangible.
En el caso del agua bendita, es agua bendecida con el propósito de recordarnos nuestro bautismo. Es una señal tanto para ahuyentar el mal como para invitar al Espíritu Santo a entrar y santificar todo lo que toca. Nos bendecimos con agua bendita cuando entramos en una iglesia para limpiarnos de cualquier mal que pueda estar sobre nosotros, pero también para recordarnos que hemos sido reclamados por Cristo como miembros de su Iglesia.
Todos los cristianos bautizados son llamados profetas, reyes y sacerdotes. En este último llamado, todos están llamados a bendecir a quienes los rodean e invitarlos a una vida nueva y más grande en el Espíritu. Mediante el uso del agua bendita, todos los bautizados pueden ofrecer su bendición a quienes los rodean, protegiéndose a sí mismos y de la obra del espíritu maligno, al mismo tiempo que afirman e invitan al Espíritu Santo a obrar a través de ellos. Así podemos usar agua bendita para bendecir nuestras velas al comienzo del Adviento, o un rosario que acabamos de adquirir, o la puerta de una casa que acabamos de alquilar. En cada caso, estamos pidiendo a Dios que bendiga el objeto para que pueda ser usado para fines santos y justos, y pueda desterrar cualquier mal presente en el lugar.
Si desea adquirir un poco de agua bendita para su propio uso, hay grifos de agua bendita cerca de la entrada este de la iglesia. Simplemente traiga una botella o recipiente limpio y llénelo. ¡Recuerda, poco a poco se llega lejos!
