Dear friends,

Greetings from Bikfaya, Lebanon! Since arriving here in September, along with 11 other Jesuits from 8 other countries, we have begun our tertianship program here by studying the life of St. Ignatius and his first companions, while building community and seeing a bit of the country. Bikfaya is northeast of Beirut, in the mountains and in a traditionally Christian region. We have been able to see parts of the city of Beirut, along with Byblos, one of the oldest continually inhabited cities on earth, and the monastery of St. Charbel, where we celebrated Mass in his tomb. It has been an enlivening and enriching time of prayer, learning, and reflection.

As I am sure you are aware, however, events in Israel and Gaza have created uncertainty in the region. Although we are far away from the Hezbollahcontrolled southern border with Israel, there is concern that escalating conflict may have consequences here in Lebanon, such as destruction of infrastructure, loss of electricity and internet, and the closing of embassies and airports. Moreover, such an environment of uncertainty does not provide an ideal environment for the reflection and quiet needed for the 30-day Spiritual Exercises. Therefore, our program has decided to change our calendar: normally, we would do the silent retreat in fall and go to a period of apostolic experience in the spring, but instead we have swapped these two.

So, in November, I will be travelling to Kampala, Uganda, to serve with Jesuit Refugee Services for three months. We will be working with refugees from South Sudan and the Congo, teaching English and connecting them with legal and social services. It is our hope that by the end of this period of service, the political situation in Lebanon will have stabilized and we can return to Bikfaya to complete the program; if not, the Society will seek a new location for us to make our long retreat.

Thank you for the prayer, notes of support and concern, and love that you have sent my way. Please know that I am safe and am well cared for by the Society of Jesus. Please keep the peoples of Lebanon, Israel, and Palestine in your prayers, that the peace which only God can bring may come to these troubled lands. I certainly keep all of you in my prayers as well.

Queridos amigos,

¡Saludos desde Bikfaya, Líbano! Desde que llegamos aquí en septiembre, junto con otros 11 jesuitas de otros 8 países, hemos comenzado nuestro programa de terciado aquí estudiando la vida de San Ignacio y sus primeros compañeros, mientras construimos comunidad y vemos un poco del país. Bikfaya está al noreste de Beirut, en las montañas y en una región tradicionalmente cristiana. Hemos podido ver partes de la ciudad de Beirut, junto con Biblos, una de las ciudades continuamente habitadas más antiguas del mundo, y el monasterio de San Charbel, donde celebramos misa en su tumba. Ha sido un tiempo vivificante y enriquecedor de oración, aprendizaje y reflexión.

Sin embargo, como estoy seguro de que saben, los acontecimientos en Israel y Gaza han creado incertidumbre en la región. Aunque estamos lejos de la frontera sur con Israel controlada por Hezbollah, existe la preocupación de que la escalada del conflicto pueda tener consecuencias aquí en el Líbano, como la destrucción de infraestructura, la pérdida de electricidad e Internet, y el cierre de embajadas y aeropuertos. Además, ese ambiente de incertidumbre no proporciona un entorno ideal para la reflexión y la tranquilidad necesarias para los Ejercicios Espirituales de 30 días. Por lo tanto, nuestro programa ha decidido cambiar nuestro calendario: normalmente haríamos el retiro de silencio en otoño e iríamos a un período de experiencia apostólica en primavera, pero en cambio hemos intercambiado estos dos.

Entonces, en noviembre viajaré a Kampala, Uganda, para servir en los Servicios Jesuitas a Refugiados durante tres meses. Trabajaremos con refugiados de Sudán del Sur y el Congo, les enseñaremos inglés y los conectaremos con servicios legales y sociales. Tenemos la esperanza de que al final de este período de servicio, la situación política en el Líbano se haya estabilizado y podamos regresar a Bikfaya para completar el programa; si no, la Sociedad buscará un nuevo lugar para realizar nuestro largo retiro.

Gracias por la oración, las notas de apoyo, preocupación y amor que me has enviado. Por favor, sepan que estoy a salvo y bien atendido por la Compañía de Jesús. Por favor, mantengan en sus oraciones a los pueblos del Líbano, Israel y Palestina, para que la paz que sólo Dios puede traer llegue a estas tierras turbulentas. Ciertamente también los tengo a todos ustedes en mis oraciones.
